Tips for a Successful Meet and Greet

Complimentary Meet & Greet

Leaving your pet in someone else’s care whether it’s for a day, a weekend, or a holiday  can be nerve-wracking. That’s why a meet and greet with your pet sitter is such an important first step. It’s your opportunity to make sure everyone’s comfortable, expectations are clear, and your pet is set up for a safe and stress-free experience.

At Furfolk, we treat every meet and greet as more than just an introduction, it’s the start of a trusting partnership between you, your sitter, and your furry family.

Building Trust and Comfort

🐾 Creating a Connection
A meet and greet helps your pet (and you!) get to know the sitter before care begins. You’ll see how your sitter interacts with your pet, and whether your pet feels relaxed or unsure around them. It’s also a great time to ask questions, talk through routines, and share anything that helps your pet feel at ease.

🐾 Peace of Mind for You Both
Trust goes both ways — your sitter learns your pet’s behaviour and personality, while you gain confidence that they’ll be cared for with the same love and attention you’d give.

Discussing Your Pet’s Needs and Routines

Every pet is unique, and this first meeting is the perfect time to share the details that make your pet’s day run smoothly:

🐾 Feeding Schedule & Preferences – What time they eat, how much, and any dietary needs. If there’s more than one pet, do they eat together or separately?

🐾 Medical Requirements – Any medications, allergies, or conditions the sitter should know about.

🐾 Exercise & Playtime – How active is your pet? Do they prefer long walks, yard play, or gentle cuddles on the couch?

🐾 Behaviour & Triggers – Is your dog social or shy? Do storms, loud noises, or separation cause anxiety? Knowing these details helps your sitter keep them calm and happy.

🐾 Leads & Equipment – Where are their leads, harnesses, or haltis kept?

Sharing this information helps your sitter provide personalised care and consistency while you’re away.

Walking Through Your Home

A meet and greet is also the ideal time to show your sitter around and explain the little things that make your home — and your pet’s routine — run smoothly.

🐾 Access and Security – How will the sitter enter and lock up? Is there a key safe, gate code, or alarm?

🐾 House Rules – Are pets allowed on the couch? Do they sleep indoors or outside? Are any rooms off-limits?

🐾 Day-to-Day Habits – Where do they eat, sleep, and play? Do they use a doggy door or need supervision indoors?

🐾 Home Care Extras – Let your sitter know if they should water plants, bring in mail, or roll out bins.

The goal is to ensure your sitter can step in seamlessly — and that your home stays just the way you like it.

Seeing How Your Pet Responds

Pets are great judges of character. Some warm up immediately; others need a little time. If your pet seems nervous or unsure, consider scheduling a short follow-up visit or walk before your trip. If they’re happy and relaxed, that’s a good sign you’ve found the right match.

Setting Clear Expectations

A good meet and greet sets everyone up for success. Be sure to cover:

🐾 What’s included in the booking (e.g. walks, feeding, playtime, medication, home care).
🐾 How often you’ll receive updates and photos through the Furfolk app.
🐾 Where your sitter will sleep (for overnight stays) and whether your pet joins them.
🐾 Which bathroom or rooms are for sitter use.
🐾 Any household quirks — broken appliances, security cameras, or delicate furniture.

Clear communication ensures a smooth, stress-free experience for everyone.

The Furfolk Difference

A meet and greet isn’t just a formality — it’s the foundation of great pet care. It builds trust, sets clear expectations, and helps your sitter deliver the kind of care your pet deserves. Taking that extra 20 minutes before your trip can make all the difference once you’re away.

After all, knowing your pet is relaxed and happy while you’re gone? That’s peace of mind — and that’s Furfolk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when a Meet and Greet Isn’t Possible?

We understand that sometimes life moves fast — especially with last-minute bookings. If you can’t meet in person, we offer video calls via Zoom or FaceTime so you can still connect and discuss everything face-to-face.

Our secure online portal also stores all your pet’s information — routines, notes, and emergency contacts — so every sitter has what they need at their fingertips.

What if my dog has special needs, anxiety or reactivity?

Many of the dogs we care for have quirks, anxieties or specific needs, and that’s completely okay. When you book, we’ll ask detailed questions about your dog’s history, triggers, routines and any vet or trainer instructions.

We only walk dogs from the same household and avoid crowded areas or off-lead dog parks for anxious or reactive dogs. Your walker will follow your handling preferences (e.g. no off-lead, crossing the street to avoid other dogs, specific harness or muzzle use) so your dog can feel as safe as possible.

We’re not behaviourists or vets, but we’re happy to work alongside them and stick closely to any management plan you already have in place.

What checks and training do Furfolk dog walkers complete?

Before anyone joins the Furfolk team, they complete our tailored training and a full vetting process, including dog-handling assessments, screening, insurance checks, and a police check. We want every owner to feel completely confident entrusting their dog to us.

Once you book a walk, you can chat with your Furfolk team member before, during, and after the visit. Ask as many questions as you like – we’re here to help. We also take the time to understand your dog’s routine and preferences, so every walk is tailored to them, not just the timetable.
